Supported Interns star on prime time TV
TWO of our former students have appeared on BBC North West Tonight to talk about their journey into employment with special educational needs.
Edward Fowler and Harry Corcoran graduated from our Supported Internship programme in 2019, securing jobs at law firm, Horwich Farrelly.
Ed works in facilities, checking and logging equipment as well as supporting reception, while Harry is in the call centre, transferring people to case handlers.
Ed said, “I have grown in my confidence. I think it has improved my life now because I have money in my bank account.”
Harry’s work experience in customer services at Trafford Hospital – part of the internship programme - stood him in good stead for his new career.
Harry said: “I’m good with voices and I think that has helped me managed the calls. I feel more social and I have expanded on my circle of friends and I’ve got something to do.”
Chief Executive Pure Innovations, which co-delivers the programme with Trafford College, Louise Parrott-Bates, said: “So many employers have preconceptions around what someone with a learning disability can achieve and actually many employers are not tapping into that pool of talent and skills. They are hard-working, reliable individuals that are currently being overlooked.”
Supported interns receive a mixture of classroom-based learning and experience of real-life education on the job at a specialist study centre based at Trafford Hospital. Students come away with a full CV and City and Guilds Employability Skills.
Tutor Fiona Halyburton said: “This programme offers people with additional needs the chance to live more independently to great success. We tailor all our teaching and learning experiences, including work placements, to the needs of each student to make it as mutually beneficial as possible.”
Students and employers continue to receive support throughout the early stages of the supported intern’s career.
