Student life begins at 40!
Access to Nursing and Midwifery student Rachel McNamara hasn’t looked back since celebrating her 40th Birthday.
The busy mum of two and successful makeup artist had always dreamed of being a midwife, but with young children to look after she never felt the time was right to return to education.
All that changed when Rachel turned 40. With her first child turning 18 and her second child settled into secondary school, she thought it was the perfect time to pursue her dream.
She enrolled on an Access to HE course at Stockport College and now hopes to continue her studies with a 3 year degree programme at university later in the year.
Rachel commented, “I’ve always been absolutely fascinated by Biology and the birthing process – from conception to the actual birth. Midwifery is also changing and becoming a lot more holistic, so I feel now is a great time to go into this field as I’m a very spiritual person.
“My children are so proud of me and I’m really grateful for their support, as I know there have been some sacrifices. It will all be worth it in the future though I’m sure.
“I’ve been so impressed with the college since I started. I completed 2 GCSEs here so it seemed a natural progression to continue my journey here. The staff are also wonderful.
“Dr Andy Stott, who is one of my tutors and a much respected doctor in the local hospitals, has inspired me so much. On top of that, the resource labs are second to none, and enable us to carry out all our practical assessments on site which is a real privilege, as I know not all colleges have these facilities.”
