Foodbank Fundraiser aired on TV

The College’s FE Foodbank Fundraiser for charities across Greater Manchester has gained the attention of a local TV station.

With many staff and students switching to remote working, making physical donations would be near-impossible, so the College set up a Just Giving page with a target to raise £10,000.

That’s TV Manchester caught up with Student Engagement Lead Michelle McLaughlin and student Michael Jarkowski from the Equalities Council to find out more.

News Reporter Chris Stott said: “"We at That's TV are all about telling the stories of real people. And this is the case now more than ever. The efforts of staff and students at the College fit our philosophy as we continue to see how our communities are striving to help each other in these difficult times."

The TV station encountered challenges collecting the footage which had to be gathered across video conferencing software and edited remotely to comply with the Government’s strict social distancing measures.

Michael, who has been supporting the fundraiser as an active member in youth politics, said: “I wanted to get involved with this because of the shocking figures of how this virus is hitting the most vulnerable members of the community.”

Student Engagement Lead Michelle McLaughlin appeared alongside Michael to reveal how the College was one of the first further education institutions to set up an initiative alongside FE fundraisers in the South.

She said: “Food poverty is quite an issue anyway, UK-wide, but with the onset of the pandemic this has increased across the country. We work very, very closely at our College with our local communities anyway, so to support them was a given.”

If you can, we urge you to donate to foodbanks across Greater Manchester through the College Group’s Just Giving page.
