College lecturer receives prestigious title

College lecturer Dr Controllah Gabi has achieved rare  recognition by becoming one of the few degree-level tutors in further education to receive ‘senior fellowship’ status.

The title is the second highest fellowship category for a lecturer from the awarding body for higher education lecturers across the world, Advance HE, and is rarely bestowed on tutors working in a further and higher education college.

According to Advance HE (formerly Higher Education Academy), a lecturer is awarded Senior Fellowship if they meet the stringent requirements of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and “can demonstrate a thorough understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as a key contribution to high quality student learning.”

Dr Gabi, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), who teaches Childhood Studies and Early Years through to degree-level at Stockport College and Trafford College, received the senior fellowship status for his work improving the education of students and other tutors as reviewed by a panel of other professors.

He said, “I’m delighted to receive senior fellowship. The title is an assurance of the quality of teaching and learning that goes on within The Trafford College Group and recognises the collaborative effort of the business of education, from the classroom cleaners and IT staff right through to student support staff and my colleagues, with whom we share good practice at regular staff conferences. Everyone’s contribution, whether frontline or professional services, makes for a conducive learning and teaching environment for which TCG is renowned.

“Achieving this award has really helped me recognise the importance of us all continuing to learn from each other and reflecting on our practices for the benefit of our students and our community of practice.”

The title received by Dr Controllah Gabi SFHEA recognises his efforts towards improving teaching and learning at Trafford and Stockport Colleges, from the self-publication of Amazon bestseller The Dissertation to his research on educating refugees and looking after student wellbeing that he presented at the European Early Childhood Research Association and British Educational Research Association respectively.

Earlier this year, Dr Gabi was awarded a Festival of Learning 2020 certificate of achievement “in recognition of their commitment and dedication to teaching and learning” by the Learning and Work Institute.

Senior Advisor Advance HE, Sally Bradley, said: “Many congratulations to Dr Gabi on his richly deserved Senior Fellowship which recognises his commitment and leadership in teaching and learning. It also demonstrates his resolve to continuous improvement in teaching excellence for benefit of all those he works with, and most importantly for the benefit of an outstanding academic experience for the students that he and his colleagues teach. I’m hope his achievement will inspire others to apply for one of the four categories of Fellowship so that their commitment and professionalism is similarly rewarded.”
