Students Tackle Hate Crime across Greater Manchester
Organised by Stockport College and Stockport MIND, the recent Hate Crime Awareness Event was established following a demand from students for officials in region to 'do more'.
It is no surprise to local organisation that students of Stockport College are outspoken about the support services available to them when it comes to Bullying, LGBTQ+, Hate Crime, Diversity and Inclusion. Having actively set up a student led Equalities Council, championing change within the college, the local community and across Greater Manchester, students have turned their attention to Hate Crime, linking with the regional campaign during Hate Crime Awareness Week.
Coordinated by the Pastoral Support team of Stockport College the Hate Crime Event was run conjunction with Stockport MIND and was open to all students in the area, including local high schools.
Sean Deakin, Programme Leader for Pastoral Support at Stockport College said “the event was a huge success with organisations from across Greater Manchester running stalls for learners to drop in throughout the day. As well as raising awareness about Hate Crime this was also a vital opportunity for learners to engage with the support services we have right here in Stockport.”
Michael Hammond, Level 2 Motor Vehicle Student at Stockport College and one of the lead students behind the organising of the event said “At College you expect to feel safe, safe from discrimination, prejudice and hate. There are plenty of ways that students see this happening inside of college, but we want to tackle this on a much bigger scale, by putting pressure on our local organisations and government bodies to implement real changes. This event wasn’t just about getting students to openly talk about Hate Crime, it was to give them a platform to start changing perceptions about everything that comes under this”.
