Welcoming world-class graphic designers
World class designers have been paying virtual visits to students at Stockport College to offer exclusive insights into working in the industry.
Head of Design at Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Paul Kelly and successful city illustrator and former student Andy Jones took part in Q&As online as recent guests of the University Centre of Stockport College to discuss working as in-house as well as self-publishing.
They added to a glitterati of big names in the business who have been setting projects for Stockport Higher Education Graphic Design and Illustration students, such as eminent United States graphic designer David Carson, Brian Grimwood and New York based Austrian storyteller Stefan Sagmeister.
The invites were the brainchild of Course Leader Paul Allen who wanted to deliver strong alternatives to visits during lockdown, and attracted some internationally-renowned names!
Paul said, “Each Tuesday afternoon we invited speakers to talk to all year groups on Teams. The focus was specifically about employment and making money! The speakers were either graphic designers or illustrators working regionally, with some further afield in London. One of the benefits of teaching on Teams is you can reach out further than you would if you had to organise a visit.”
‘Professional practice Tuesdays’ occupied the space where soon-to-be graduating L6 students would normally be visiting agencies and studios and revving up their industry focus.
