Course Overview

On this degree-relevant course, you wi’ll examine several facets of what it means to be a professional photographer in the twenty-first century.
Discover useful techniques such as exposure and metering, digital workflow, colour and black-and-white printing, studio lighting, large and medium format, organising and placing exhibitions, developing a professional photographic portfolio, and working with moving images.
You can opt to concentrate on areas like art, documentary, editorial, commercial, advertising, and critical writing about photography when developing work across the field of photography, according to your individual interests and professional goals.

64 UCAS points (those with 48 UCAS points will be considered for an interview)
BTEC Level 3 qualification (2 years) in relevant subject
Other related Level 3 qualifications
Normally 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (or numeric score of 4/5 under newly reformed GCSE grading), including maths or English
An Access to Higher Education Diploma in relevant area

Related work experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications

This stimulating and challenging contemporary photography degree encourages you to develop technical photographic skills, as well as engage intellectually with the issues and debates relating to industry practices. With an emphasis on thorough theoretical knowledge and contemporary practice, you will explore and communicate your own approach to photography through independent, self-directed projects.

The teaching team continues to develop a strong network of contacts and collaborators within the photographic industry enriches the course curriculum and legitimises its ethos. This network includes practising artists and photographers, representatives from professional photographic associations, staff from feeder colleges and ex-students who have gone on to establish successful careers for themselves within photography and its related industries.

You can progress into a variety of careers in photography, arts and creative industries. Graduates have found employment in teaching, editorial & amp; PR photography, magazine work, arts-based commissions, self-employment, forensic and medical photography and commercial photography both in the UK and abroad. You can also take up a place on Masters programmes or other postgraduate study, including teaching in primary, secondary or post compulsory education.

Whilst there are no formal examinations – We usde a wide range of assessment methods throughout the course. You will also be encouraged to assess and evaluate your own progress and the work of others as part of your studies. The course values the ability to reflect on learning and to use assessment as a tool to improve and get better. You will receive regular verbal and written feedback throughout the year culminating in key assessment points when summative* feedback in provided.

*Summative assessment is where you recieve a mark for your work.

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive BA (Hons) Contemporary Photography

Access to digital equipment including laptops and printing facilities is provided. Whilst the course has a stock of cameras including medium format, students are expected to have already invested in a camera of their own but this is not essential to start the course. You might be expected to visit events as part of your studies that would sometimes require extra cost. There is an annual residential to an International destination which whilst not compulsory is strongly recommended. Previous destinations have included Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Barcelona and New York.

Year 1, full time course fee is £7,999.00

Eligible students can apply for a tuition fee loan from Student Loans Company. You can apply for the exact amount of loan to cover your tuition fees, and this will be paid directly to us by the Student Loan Company on your behalf. You may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.
