Students will make links between theory and practice, gain a deeper knowledge of how children learn and develop and explore aspects of social policy which affects children and their families.

All applications will be considered individually however offers will usually be based on:

64 UCAS points (those with 48 UCAS points will be considered for an interview)
BTEC Level 3 qualification (2 years) in relevant subject
Other related Level 3 qualifications
Normally 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (or numeric score of 4/5 under newly reformed GCSE grading) in English or maths
An Access to Higher Education Diploma in relevant area
Related work experience will be considered in place of a formal qualifications.

You must have experience of working with children post level 3 and currently be working for a minimum of 2 days per week in an appropriate setting. This can be paid or voluntary.

This course caters for people who are already working in the field of early years and childcare to provide a professional development opportunity. Our course links current research and child development theory to professional practice and has well established relationships with local and regional employers.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree, students have moved to a managerial positionin their workplace. They can also apply for a one year level 6 ‘Top-up’ to the BA (Hons) Childhood Studies at Stockport College, which is also awarded by Sheffield Hallam University. The majority of students choose this option to enhance their career progression opportunities further. For example, some students have pursued PGCE Primary qualification routes or EYTS.

A range of assessment methods are used from reports, academic posters, essays, presentations and portfolios. Typically each module has one form of assessment attached to it. The assessments have been carefully designed to support and develop your skills in independent thinking and learning and you will gain confidence to offer a point of view.
