Course Overview

Our UAL approved course is aimed at artists and designers of the future, who want to develop their drawing skills and experimentation with art and design techniques to make them a better artist.

This course takes place within our £23 million redevelopment the Art and Design and Media Building, with state of the art facilities.

You will learn how to research, plan, produce and reflect on your work. You also cover the following to ensure you get a diverse experience of the industry:

– Painting and printmaking (2D)
– Sculpture and 3D design
– Time-Based Media (Photography, Animation, Photoshop, Graphics)
– Textiles/ Fashion

Applicants must have 5 GCSE’s at grade 9 – 4 including atleast one creative subject, and English. A merit grade for Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design with GCSE English is also accepted.

Industry Standard Facilities include:

Creative Media suites equipped with latest Mac technology and industry software
Photography studios and dark room
TV studio with green screen, cameras, and lighting
Ceramic and 3D studios
Garment construction fashion and textiles
Print room – screen printing, exposure bed, lazer cutting and risograph
Art studios and exhibition area

On this specialist one year Diploma qualification (equivalent to one and a half A levels) you will complete 9 units, which will introduce you to the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to explore their creative development through a wide range of subjects.

Other madatory modules include:

Introduction to visual language
Introduction to research skills
Introduction to critical and contextual awareness
Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills
An integrated approach to 2D problem solving
An integrated approach to 3D problem solving
An integrated approach to time-based problem solving
Developing an art and design project
Opportunities for progression


This Diploma in Art and Design also offers an accredited and certificated ‘jumping off point’ at the end of year one, should you choose not to progress onto our Extended Diploma qualification.

If you choose to continue onto the second year of study, you will complete a further 4 units, which will increase the qualification to a full Extended Diploma in Art and Design, which is equivalent to 3 full A levels.

On successful completion of this entire course, you will be able to progress onto the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design.

Units 1 – 7 and unit 9 of the Diploma in Art & Design will be internally assessed and internally moderated against the assessment criteria for those units.

Unit 8 will be internally assessed, internally and externally moderated against the assessment and grading criteria for those units.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are a resident in the UK and the European Economic Area or have been for the last 3 years. You must be under 19 years old on 31st August in the calendar year you start your course.
