A Stockport College lecturer has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising almost £2,000 for Alzheimer’s UK thanks to donations from students and staff.

Carpentry and joinery tutor Dave Morgan, 53, scaled the 5,895 metre peak in Tanzania on April 17 with his 21-year-old son Tom and family friend Jordan Tatton.

The trio spent 12 months training on some of the UK’s highest mountains in order to reach the African summit, which involved camping out for seven nights, walking in temperatures of -20oC - in seven layers of clothes - and headaches from altitude sickness.

Dave said: “I’m sharing my story to motivate others to go for their goals. A lot of the planning I do at College came in useful during our preparation, and, at the last camp, I was able to share the communication skills I use at work with the village by making a speech to thank the team of porters and cook for helping us.

“Reaching the summit of Africa’s highest mountain shows what can be achieved by breaking out of your comfort zone. I hope that is what my students have taken from this, that the line of most resistance is what builds character. Perseverance pays off.”

Since Dave embarked on the challenge, students and staff at Stockport College rallied round by donating to his Just Giving page, helping him smash his £1,750 fundraising target.

He added: “Everyone has been very generous. That’s what Stockport College is all about – giving back to our community.”

The trio chose to raise money for Alzheimer’s UK because Jordan’s grandmother suffers from the disease. The charity provide research and care for around 850,000 people in the UK affected by Alzheimer’s, which is the most common cause of dementia. Symptoms include confusion, communication difficulties, mood changes and memory loss.
