Foundation Degree (FdA) in Graphic Design & Illustration

Course Overview

Students on this exciting hybrid programme will gain the necessary knowledge and experience of design principles and fundamentals that underpin graphic design and illustration practice past and present. Using this as a foundation, you will apply creative thinking to real world design challenges, both in digital and in print. The course will suit those with a passion for drawing and creating or those who are interested in typography and layout or even better… a combination of both! You will have the opportunity to participate in ‘live’ projects, work collaboratively or in teams, and attend freelance and networking events. Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the confidence and ability to use your skills in numerous ways, choosing career paths such as graphic design, illustration, art direction (in graphics or advertising), animation, web-design, surface design, or participation in arts-based projects within the community. Alternatively you can progress seamlessly onto our Level 6 Top Up in Contemporary Creative Practice.

Course Requirements

All applications will be considered individually however offers will usually be based on:

64 UCAS points (those with 48 UCAS points will be considered for an interview)
BTEC Level 3 qualification (2 years) in relevant subject
Other related Level 3 qualifications. Normally 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (or numeric score of 4/5 under newly reformed GCSE grading), including maths or English

An Access to Higher Education Diploma in relevant area.

Related work experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications

Course Assessment

Whilst there are no formal examinations - We usde a wide range of assessment methods throughout the course. You will also be encouraged to assess and evaluate your own progress and the work of others as part of your studies. The course values the ability to reflect on learning and to use assessment as a tool to improve and get better. You will receive regular verbal and written feedback throughout the year culminating in key assessment points when summative* feedback in provided.

*Summative assessment is where you recieve a mark for your work.

Course Finance

Please contact the College for further information.Access to digital equipment including laptops and cameras is provided but students as they progress often invest in their own. This is not essential to start the course. You might be expected to visit events as part of your studies that would sometimes require extra cost. There is an annual residential to an International desitnation which whilst not compulsary is strongly recommended. Previous destinations have included Berlin, Krakow, Budapest, Barcelona and New York.

Course Includes

This two year FdA course isn't just about graphic design and illustration; it encompasses UX and interactive design, animation, motion graphics, printmaking and photography. Modules are designed to be flexible, this allows you to specialise in either graphic design or illustration early in the course or take your time deciding while you get a feel for different subject areas in the creative industries. At the end of year two you can automatically progress onto our Level 6 Top Up in Contemporary Creative Practice, making this pathway a 3-year process like all other degrees.

Award

You will be awarded a Foundation Degree that is an internationally recognised qualification and the equivalent of Level 4 and 5 of an Honours Degree. On successful completion you will have the option of leaving to begin employment or continuing with us in the University Centre to top up your studies to level 6 with a full BA Hons Degree.
