Construction Skills Level 1 Extended Certificate

Course Overview

This is a practical-based course which covers a range of skills relevant to the construction sector including bricklaying, plumbing and painting and decorating.

If you like working with your hands but are not quite sure what you are interested in this course allows you to try out lots of different skills to see which you like best. The course allows you to learn new skills in multi-skills workshops, especially designed to accommodate anything from joinery through to brickwork or painting and decorating. All our staff are skilled, friendly and will support you throughout your studies.

The course is aimed at school leavers who are intending to become employed in the Construction Industry

Course Requirements

A minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 1 - 2

Course Skills & Benefits

This qualification covers a range of basic tasks and underpinning knowledge involved in Brickwork, Plumbing and Painting and Decorating.

Mandatory Units

Course Content:

Brickwork
Bricklaying using stretcher bond
Bricklaying using English bond
Constructing a semi-circle arch
Constructing a cavity wall

Plumbing
Copper pipe blending and joining
Working with steel pipework and jointing
Connecting plastic fitting to utility sink and cold water cistern and central heating header tank and working with non-manipulative compression fittings

Painting and Decorating
Burning off and applying acrylic paint
Designing nameplate in block stencils
Accessing for painting and decorating
Preparing an area for vinyl silk emulsion and preparing and bringing forward to an oil gloss finish

Course Progression

Successful completion of this qualification allows you to progress onto the following qualifications:
Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Brickwork, Painting and Decorating or Plumbing (Apprenticeship)
Level 2 Diploma in Brickwork, Painting and Decorating or Plumbing

Course Assessment

The Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills has mandatory units that you must complete successfully to achieve the qualification.
You will be assessed through practical assignments and online multiple choice tests for each unit.

Course Finance

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are a resident in the UK and the European Economic Area or have been for the last 3 years. You must be under 19 years old on 31st August in the calendar year you start your course.
