Allie Crewe - Photography
Allie Crewe was 47 when she signed up to the College’s evening class in photography after becoming disheartened in her own career in the education sector and longed for a job where she could explore her more creative side.
“The course gave me the technical training I needed in studio photography so that I had the confidence to go out and seek freelance work. I went on to an additional course to further my artistic skills and help build my confidence.
Confidence was my main limitation, but after a year of continuing teaching part-time and freelancing as a photographer, I finally took the plunge and became a full-time professional portrait photographer.
I think as a woman and a mum, you can sometimes lose confidence in a workplace, but returning to education has improved my life. I work hard and I am making a profit, and I’m not as stressed as I used to be.
I have encouraged lots of mums to retrain, take the plunge, start networking and learn some business skills and I am still learning too."
Allie’s photography has been exhibited in The Getty Gallery and Lloyds in London, she’s had work published in portrait books here in the UK and in America and the 50-year-old was shortlisted for the 2017 British Photography Awards. Yet she remains as ambitious as ever to achieve even further successes and inspire others to follow their dreams.
“Just sign up and try something, you may not end up working in that area, but opening doors is thrilling and it really energised me.”
